The olympic distance triathlon consists of a 1.5 K swim, 40 K bike and a 10 K run. The swim will be a beach start, entering Lake Michigan, and swim parallel with the shoreline in approximately 6 to 10 feet deep water. Historically, water temperatures fluctuate from 58 to 74 degrees, so wetsuits are allowed and encouraged. Once exiting the water, you have just under a 1/2 mile run on the boardwalk to the transition area at the Tri Cities YMCA.
The bike course is an out and back route taking you along the river and state park. You will take a couple city streets before connecting to Lakeshore Drive which is very scenic, tree lined and relatively flat with only a couple moderate hills.
The run course will exit the YMCA's rear parking lot and immediately be taken to the boardwalk. The run course will take you along the waterfront, past waterfront stadium, city marina, waterfront shops and out to and around Harbor Island before returning the same route.
The sprint distance triathlon consists of a .5 K swim, 20 K bike and a 5 K run. This swim portion also has a beach start, entering Lake Michigan and swim parallel with the shoreline 6 to 10 feet deep water. Once exiting the water, you also have just under a 1/2 mile run on the boardwalk to the transition area at the Tri Cities YMCA.
The bike course is also out and back along the same route as the olympic distance. The course, naturally, is not as long.
The run course also exits the YMCA rear parking lot and be taken to the scenic boardwalk. For the first 1.55 miles, you will be on the same course as the olympic participants, enjoying the scenic waterfront, city marina and local shops on an out and back course.
The olympic duathlon consists of a 5 K run, 40 K bike followed by a 10 K run. The run and bike course are the same routes as the olympic triathlon course. See olympic maps, above.
The sprint duathlon consists of a 5 K run, 20 K bike and another 5 K run. The run and bike course are the same routes as the sprint triathlon course. See sprint maps, above.
